Derek was the first person I met when I moved from the valley into Charlottesville. He was so friendly and funny. He lived in my neighborhood (Carrsbrook), and Derek, Doug Birkhead, Rod Marymor, and I used to sneak out at night and walk around the neighborhood. I remember particularly a skating party we had on the little pond behind his house, when we'd had an unusually cold winter. Derek helped me put on skates for the first time ever, then put me on the end of the line for crack-the-whip!

What a great sense of humor Derek had! I remember him well. RIP
